Have some poems! Anyone still read this? [Sep. 13th, 2007|08:42 am]
The Emptied Pen

Hey! So I'm taking Poetry Writing again, and every week, he gives us a prompt for a poem. So I thought I'd give you all the same prompts and then show you what I came up with! So everyone, you have three weeks to write three poems. Sound fair? DO THIS! Hehe

Prompt #1: Write an ode to an inaminate object.

Prompt #2: Write a "dramatic monologue" poem in the voice of someone other than yourself.

Prompt #3: Write a poem in stanzas, less than 21 lines in length, about a color. But either don't name the color at all in the poem, or name the color A LOT in the poem.

Ode to Carpet

Lying on a sea of
tiny fabric worms,
an island surrounded
by wrinkled clothes,
scattered, used books,
and classic rock albums.
It's an ugly shade, somewhere
in between
off-white and brown.
The cats have shreaded a patch.
It tries to emerge so
I push it back down with my toe.

My hand slides across
coffee stains
and splashes of red wine.
Your worn pieces
provide little comfort
from the stone foundation
I remember you from nap time,
awake in a class room,
staring at blue paint,
counting to 100.

You brush against the goosebumps
on my arms
as I recreate snow angels
in different shades.

Three Hours to Memphis

It’s the old diner at 3:00 in the morning.
Sipping coffee when that old song comes
on the jukebox,
and the waitress with the Marilyn dress
and the long, red curls
smiles at me through her red lipstick.

Packing up
fragments in
the back seat of my teal 1954 Bel Air and now
I’m gone.
Yellow and white lines
on black pavement
zooming underneath me
and I listen to that same old song
the entire three hours
to the golden streets.
Shoo bop do bee doo wap
Shoo bop do bee doo wap.

Oh, how I miss
white milk shakes with the cherries on top,
rolled up jeans, grease in my
jet black hair, cigarettes in my sleeve.

The sun rises as I find myself
in the parking in lot,
staring at you,
the way the Million Dollar Quartet did. I can’t believe
his lips touched the microphone that
stands inside of your walls
when rock n’ roll was born
long before I was.
And I feel less at home than ever.

The traffic light tells me to move forward
and I’m still choking on this herbal haze
trying to forget the shade your eyes turned
when you saw her.

I stumble out of the car onto sharp blades of grass,
and the pine trees look so vibrant in contrast with the sky.
Grasshoppers dance around me and I almost forget
the picture of your lips on hers.

I remember the pack of menthol cigarettes
she grabbed them from pocket of your corduroy pants
and her fingernails were painted to match your eyes.
You thought no one was watching. You were wrong.

I need some writers in my life! [Apr. 10th, 2007|02:03 pm]

Okay. I know no one ever uses this anymore, and the writing group kind of disintegrated, but I think we should start it back up! At least just online. What do you say?

So. Here. Everyone has to post either a poem, a short story, a short play, a piece of a novel, a piece of a screenplay, something by the end of the week. By Saturday. 4/14. And then we should all give each other feedback. Come on, guys! It will be fun! And then maybe next week, someone can post a writing prompt!

Who's with me? Lindsay? Sakka? Alisha? Rebecca? Nick? Nikki? Anyone? *crickets*

Post it in a separate, new entry. I'll start.

So . . . are we ever meeting again, or what? [Apr. 4th, 2007|09:14 pm]
The Emptied Pen

[Current Music |Man Man, "Banana Ghost"]

So, last I heard we were talking about getting together sometime after Easter, but hadn't decided on a day.  How is next weekend (April 14th or 15th) for everyone?  At this point I'm free either afternoon, but I'd probably prefer Sunday.  I'm also willing to host.

Hear Ye, Hear Ye [Mar. 11th, 2007|11:23 am]
The Emptied Pen

So zen_sakka has so kindly offered to host the writing group meeting at her place. It appears that March 25th is the day that works for those that responded (it's a Sunday the weekend after St. Patty's Day).

What I will do, just to help things move along, is to post some prompts the week before the meeting. You can write on them if you wish...if you're like me, and the writer's block is stomping on your head, then it might help to get the juices flowing.

I'd like to turn the meetings towards writing AT the meetings as well.

Since it will be held at the home of a member, an RSVP would be loverly. So, who's coming?

**EDIT** It looks like it will be best if we wait until after Easter. That gives us plenty of time to plan and schedule for everyone :)

*tap* Is this thing on? [Mar. 3rd, 2007|10:25 pm]
The Emptied Pen

Hey guys,

My life had been in a crazy roust-a-bout lately, but I'd really like to start the writing group again.

If you haven't noticed, I've changed my journal name to something that really suits me more in the present sense than the past. Please add my new journal name if you like...I know some of you might have missed the post where I explained it all :)

Let's get a consensus of which weekend day we might all be available...maybe shoot for the weekend after St. Patty's day?

My play [Feb. 2nd, 2007|04:24 pm]
The Emptied Pen

Hey guys. Most of you read my LJ, but I decided to post this here anyway.

So. I wrote a play, and next Saturday (2/10) I am getting together a bunch of my actor friends to read through my play in the student center of KSU.

If any of you would like to come listen and offer me any critique you may have for me, I would really appreciate it. I think Lindsay already mentioned that she might want to come...

It would be great to see you guys, if nothing else :)

Cross-posted to my journal, that_sakka_girl [Jan. 14th, 2007|03:49 pm]
The Emptied Pen

I was chatting with my friend theindiequeen last night via a series of text messages, and we realized how long it's been since we've seen each other. And I realize that I'm partly to blame for that, because she is a songstress and plays out in and around the Atlanta area, and I've been to see her band before plus her playing acoustic solo, and I just haven't done it lately. This could be attributed to the fact that a lot of her gigs are during the week, and she often will start playing at 9 or 10 p.m., and I'm a mess at work the next day if I don't get enough sleep. But anyway, that's not really the point of this post.

I've enjoyed being a member of theemptiedpen, a NW Atlanta/Cobb County writing group started by the illustrious oberonia, who has become a friend of mine through this community. I was unable to attend a few of the last meetings, and since that time, oberonia had some rather serious surgery, and has been recovering.

We have discussed on and off restarting the writing group, and I know she can't do it on her own. I've considered helping to take over, as long as we don't meet TOO often, since I have other things going on in my life, but I don't want the writing group to evaporate altogether. oberonia put a lot of time and effort into forming this group, and I want to pay homage to that by trying to continue it, but perhaps on a smaller basis - maybe meetings once a month?

I asked theindiequeen last night that if I started having the meetings again, and had them at my place (since the venue we were using before is no longer friendly to us), would she come? She answered enthusiastically that yes, she would, and she felt that a lot of the other core members of the group would come too.

So, I'm making this post, both in my journal and in the community, to see if there is some interest in continuing the meetings, perhaps at my place, and probably once a month to help us all galvanize our writing skills and jump-start our creativity.

I live in Vinings, just barely ITP, but still in Cobb Country. I have an Atlanta mailing address, but I'm a hop, skip and a jump from Marietta/Smyrna. I could provide coffee, tea, and perhaps some light snacks, as I think we'll probably meet early to mid-afternoon, and maybe have an hour to two-hour meeting once a month for starters.

What are your thoughts? (I'm posting this in my journal also.)

Writing group meeting? [Nov. 11th, 2006|01:19 pm]
The Emptied Pen

Anyone want to meet at Cool Beans in the Marietta Square tomorrow? Around 2 perhaps?

Just bring something you've written recently, bring enough copies for everyone, and we can give group critique. I'll try to come up with some writing prompts, too.

Who's with me?

Next week's meeting [Nov. 5th, 2006|03:54 pm]

So now that The Corner is closed on Sundays, what are we going to do for next weekend's meeting?

If we wanted to move it back to Saturdays, I'd be fine with that. I'd also be fine with moving it to a different location. Borders was very distracting, though, and I'd honestly rather have it somewhere else. I'd be willing to have it at my place, or going to someone else's place.

Any other suggestions?

*crawls out from under rock* [Oct. 22nd, 2006|06:47 pm]
The Emptied Pen

Sorry Rebecca and I won't be able to make it to the meeting today. We're both VERY sick with this nasty cold/flu going around. She's even cancelled her show at The Corner this evening. We'll both be home and medicated if you need us. We apologize, but we don't feel well and we certainly don't want to spread the funk around to anyone else.

Here is one of the writing prompts that I completed before my head caved in:

Write an intriguing first line for a romance novel. Repeat the exercise, writing first lines for a mystery, horror, Western and a suspense story.

Romance: Sweet Lily, with skin white as a winter's kiss, danced in his thoughts as he began to run.

Mystery: The return address was simply PeterCtnTail.

Horror: The salt, heavy on his swollen tongue, tasted like the last few hours of a man’s life should taste.

Western: I spent my days with the wind where those of my kind paid tribute to the Grass and Mountain.

Reminder for Writing Group Meeting! [Oct. 20th, 2006|08:05 am]
The Emptied Pen
Happy Friday, all!

This is just a reminder that our next meeting will be held this upcoming Sunday, October 22nd, at 4:00 p.m. at The Corner.

If anyone has any questions about the meeting or needs directions, please phone me at 678-986-1752. If I don't answer, *please* leave a message.

Remember to do at least two of the writing prompts listed in the previous post in this community. Bring extra copies for everyone to critique. And come prepared to write!

I *so* look forward to seeing everyone who can make it!

Next Writing Group Meeting [Oct. 16th, 2006|10:29 pm]
The Emptied Pen
Since I'm running the next writing group meeting, i.e. no one complained about my volunteering to do so, I'll post some writing prompts here for the meeting.

Also, does everyone still want to meet at the Corner? Is that most convenient for everyone? It's fine for me, but I figured I would put it out there if people want to meet somewhere else this time. Any suggestions?

Writing Prompts

1. What do you like most about yourself? Why?

2. What is one thing you would do if fear didn't hold you back? Why are you afraid?

3. Where would you prefer to be right now - mountains, desert, beach, etc. - and why? Describe your surroundings in detail, and why they make you so happy.

4. Your pet (real or imagined) suddenly gained the ability to talk. What questions would you ask him or her? Describe the conversation in detail.

5. Write an intriguing first line for a romance novel. Repeat the exercise, writing first lines for a mystery, horror, Western and a suspense story.

I would really love for everyone to do *two* or more of these prompts for the next meeting. Please make several copies to pass around so everyone can read and critique. Also, bring blank paper - I may spring a writing prompt or two on you in the actual meeting, so come prepared to WRITE.

I'd really love to know who is all planning on attending the next meeting. It's being held out of sequence due to popular demand, so I hope we have a good turnout.

Poll #846367 Meeting poll for next Sunday, October 22nd

Do you plan on attending our next meeting?

Yes, definitely, I'll be there.
Pretty sure I'll be there.
I don't know yet.
I can't make it.
No, no, no - I've never been to a meeting and I have no clue why I joined this writing group.

Can't wait to see everyone!

Um... [Oct. 14th, 2006|07:33 pm]
The Emptied Pen

So, according to the poll, two of us want to meet on the 22nd, one of us wants to meet in November, and the other two of us are crack-heads.

lol Those last two grape lovers are Sara and I...not that you had to guess.

That means we WILL have a meeting on October 22nd (I would love it if someone else brought writing prompts or wanted to conduct the meeting), and a meeting after that on Nov. 12th to resume our every other week meetings.

I thought so.

I'm out, cha-cha.

Howdy and Hello [Oct. 13th, 2006|05:06 pm]
The Emptied Pen

Ok, here's the deal folks. Rebecca's parents are not going out of town this weekend, but she and I are still going up because we'd like a mini-vacation before my end of the month craziness (most of you are on my filter so you know).

We can do this one of two ways.

1: We can cancel this weekend's meeting and hold the next meeting on Nov. 12 as scheduled (I should be better by then).

2: We can shift our to next weekend and have the meeting on Sunday October 22nd, and can pick back up to our regularly scheduled program Nov. 12.

It is totally up to you guys:

Poll #844028 Meetings

How shall we arrange it?

Let's just meet on November 12th.
Are you kidding? I miss you and the gang terrible and MUST meet on October 22nd!!!
Screw you guys, I'm going home.
I love grapes.
